Councillor Murad Gassanly reports;

‘Yesterday evening myself and my fellow Churchill ward Councillors attended a packed public meeting, organised by Churchill Gardens Preservation Society – a new organisation, set up by local residents to protect the estate from unwanted redevelopment. Myself and Jason Thomas Williams assured residents we’re speaking up for them at the City Hall and are opposed to any demolitions on Churchill Gardens estate – a protected conservation area of major architectural and historical value. The estate needs investment and more social, affordable housing. The Council’s previous attempts at “consultation” have been abandoned recently in the face of growing opposition and negative media coverage. The Council accepted that their approach fell far below residents’ expectations. Now we need to determine new terms of reference for a proper consultation process, to be led by the community, in order to determine what is needed on the estate. The people must be in charge of this process. Labour members will work with the Council to ensure our residents get the best possible deal.’
