The Churchill Labour Action Team have called for an end to the Tories wasteful spending on scaffolding for a derelict local pub and for the money to be spent on essential public services. Westminster City Council has been spending over £20,000 a year on scaffolding since
The Balmoral Castle, situated on the Churchill Gardens Estate, closed in 2006. The total bill to Council Tax payers is now over £140,000, not including VAT. According to information uncovered by Westminster’s Labour Councillors.
Labour Action Group member Jason Williams said ‘the Tory Council paying £20,000 a year for scaffolding without a plan for the building’s future all these years while cutting essential services is a scandal which must end.’
In April 2010, the Council announced; “Residents should be assured that we want to resolve this situation and we will be working with them in the coming weeks.” However, three and a half years later, nothing has happened and the pub remains derelict and supported by scaffolding.
