Pimlico Library lift

We are making enquiries – again – as the library lift is once more out of action;

“Apparently it’s been out for over three weeks now. The young mothers groups are unable to meet as the Adult education people are saying they cannot leave their buggies upstairs and disabled people have not had access to the library”

The Council says;

“We are aware of problems with the lift at Pimlico library and it has been agreed to replace it. Property Services commissioned a feasibility study which looked at the level of use, and recommended a new robust passenger lift will need to be installed. The estimated budget spend to replace the lift is £250,000. Property Services has gained written consent from Pimlico Academy, and met WAES to discuss the impact of the proposed works on their service. WAES were concerned that the work which includes excavating a new lift shaft would have an adverse impact on their attendance and income and requested changes to the plans which will increase costs and time to some extent. A tender has now been issued with two options, one that meets WAES requirements and an “unrestricted” option so that the any additional cost attracted by the former option is understood. We recognise this is not ideal – although the lift’s reliability has improved since the new motor was fitted it is still far from reliable. As soon as we have got clarity on the timescale we will explain this to customers, and in the meantime library staff are helping customers who have buggies to use the stairs on occasions when the lift breaks down.”
